COLLEGIALITY A FAÇADE OR WHAT - MY OPINION
Before I proceed on this article, I would like to say that
collegiality simply refers to the togetherness of various faculties in college.
The polity in the COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES cannot be compared to any other
college on campus rather would I compare it to faculties like EDM and ARTS
because of how tense it is in those various faculties. Generally, we are HEALTH
PRACTITIONERS who should be trained to work as a team and not as a personnel
but it seems reverse is the case and this I will say is the root cause of the
NMA- JOHESU we see at the higher level.
A college made up of 3 faculties has always been contending
on superiority and influence. I remember a particular set where choosing the
general class rep almost divided the college. It took the intervention of the
authorities to calm the waters. Even at that several means have always been
divide to poster ‘collegiality’ among various faculties and departments but it
gets complicated at the end of the day.
Just recently, a new curriculum was introduced in which not
all departments in the faculty will be having classes together as before. Take
for example PHYSIOLOGY in which MEDICINE and DENTISTRY will be having a
separate class from NURSING and MED REHAB or ANATOMY in which Nursing will be
having a totally separate class. This I say may have its own good but it’s
doing more harm good to the collegiality we are clamoring for. It has made some
department more segregated from the whole.
These would have made more sense for freshmen especially
with organizing of a college party but some are shying away from it mainly
because they feel that’s the first opportunity to really know their new
members. A number of the others do not know their new members. A number of
others do not appreciate the idea after all. Although, I don’t think
collegiality is impossible. In fact have seen collegiality work most especially
in the last Student’s Union Election that pronounced Dr. IBK winner of the
election.
If Dr IBK could play his policies well among the 3
faculties, I feel it’s not a herculean task bearing the major barriers in our
hearts. If we really want it to happen it will happen. Let’s tackle the root
cause of the unrest within NAMA-JOHESU now. Collegiality might not be
impossible but it is getting more of a mirage than a reality.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
